2019 Loy Krathong / Thai Food Festival

Loy Krathong is one of the most colorful festivals in Thailand. It began in the Sukhothai period (over 700 years ago) and is still widely celebrated in the twelfth Lunar month (which normally falls in November) on the full moon night. The word “ Loy” means “to float” and “Krathong” is a lotus-shaped floater made of banana leaves. The Krathong usually contains a candle, three incense sticks, some flowers and coins. The history of Loy Krathong Festival is of Brahmin origin. On this occasion we, 1) offer thanks to the Goddess of the river which is our source of life, 2) ask for forgiveness from the Goddess of the river for having used and made the rivers dirty, 3) offer flowers, candles and incense sticks as a tribute to the Holy Footprint of the Buddha, 4) to wash away the previous year’s misfortunes, and 5) to wish for a happy and healthy new year.
